About the Art: Since the tragic events of September 11, 2001, there has been a resurgence of patriotism in America. Old themes and mottos have been deeply felt once again amidst all the cyber static of the age. A strong sense of unity and brotherhood has crescendoed as American flags can be seen proudly displayed in practically every corner of society.

Although the heightened sense of pride in being an American is a highly positive movement, it also sheds light on an irony that has existed in this country for hundreds of years. The stars and stripes that beckoned freedom for scores of newly arriving immigrants also served to squelch the dreams and freedoms of those already living here. Their world was reduced from open frontiers to barren reservations and government commodities.

It is impossible to undo history, but in a time such as this let us take the time to honor those whose ancestors trod upon American soil when it was still young. Even though their contributions to making this country great go largely unrecognized let us even now boast on the valiant lives lived by our Native American forefathers. When we catch a glimpse of an American flag rippling in the wind let our hearts be aglow with the sentiment that our flag embodies- life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness...for all people. May we acquire a new vision of our homeland and at long last become the family of man... the children of God.
