Artist: David Behrens Title: Wind Weaver Size: 17-1/2" x 28" Edition: Artist Signed and Numbered, Limited Edition to 500 Medium: Fine Art Print on Paper About the Art: Visions of the earthen, rustic American west have always been laden with images of the horse and all the strength and freedom he embodies. Nowhere else is this sentiment most fully captured than in the bond that existed between the Plains Indians and the American Paint Horse. Because of its unusual endurance and spotted patterns Paint Horses attained legendary status among Native People and the right to own one was reserved only to the chieftains and those highly esteemed among the tribe.
The origin of the Paint Horse occurred almost purely accidentally when Plains Indians crossed the bloodlines of wild horses with the horses that were brought from Spain. This resulted in a larger, spotted horse that became invaluable because of its capacity to camouflage itself and its rider from a potential enemy. Each Paint Horse bore unique markings and eventually were classified into three groups: the Tobiano, the Overo, and the Tovero.
When a Paint Horse gallops full stride across an open meadow, waves of wind blow through him lifting his mane and tail, allowing it in that moment to reflect the full beauty the Creator intended him to bare. As a weaver intricately labors on his loom, so God in the heavens weaves wind and spills it upon the surface of the earth causing everything in its wake to become wildly alive. May even we be awakened by this unseen tapestry.
The name of the horse featured in this painting is Enough Stuff. He is a Tobiano Paint Horse owned by Brook Hamlin of Elkin, North Carolina and has been featured in several books and has been spotlighted at many equine events representing his breed. Linda Little Wolf, a renowned educator and historian from Ocala, Florida, calls Enough Stuff her “equine educational partner” and he has become an essential part of her lectures pertaining to Plains Indian life and the Paint Horse.
