Throughout his childhood, Finley would often follow along with John Gnagy, an artist who taught drawing on television. He did not actually begin to paint, however, until the twelfth grade. Graduating with a business degree from Jacksonville State University, he took only one introductory art course but it was here that his real desire to paint was sparked. In his junior year, Finley sold a painting at an outdoor art show. At that time, he made a decision to concentrate on painting for one year and see if he could make a living at it. By his senior year, he was paying all his expenses from the sale of his art work. Finley has been a full-time artist ever since. A full member of the American Watercolor Society, Finley has received more than 70 awards including the Larry Quackenbush Memorial Award from the American Watercolor Society in New York. Adding to his achievements, Finley was selected for inclusion in Who’s Who in American Art and his paintings are the subject of a book Donny Finley’s Moments Captured.
