About the Art: Spencer Hodge was inspired to paint Concealment by a late-eveing sighting of a leopard in the Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania, after a long and dusty day in the open. The artist describes the sighting as a last gift before dusk and night". The volcanic Ngorongoro crater is the largest unbroken caldera in the world. Covering 260 square kilometers, it provides a microcosm of the scenery and wildlife of East Africa. Spencer Hodge's painting is really a ortrait of the tree; the leopard only comes into focus as a visual afterthought, which is exactly the way it usually works when one has the rare good fortune to spot a camouflaged big cat in the wild."
