About the Art: Mountains and Rivers portrays three beautiful Chinese women wearing antique robes from the time of the last kingdom of China, the Qing Dynasty, which thrived in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Professor Di collects original clothing from the Qing period and has assembled an extensive wardrobe, which he uses as reference for his remarkable paintings. The robes used in this painting would have been worn by wealthy Chinese people, but not by the nobility. Professor Di painted this subject 'to illustrate the beauty of China and the Chinese people'. The models, in their antique robes, represent the people of China whilst the stylised mountains in the background represent the vastness and splendour of the Chinese landscape.
