The park, which covers 392 square kilometres, lies at the foot of the majestic Mount Kilamanjaro and provides a natural environment for over 50 species of herbivore and carnivore and almost 400 species of bird. In particular Amboselli is an acknowledgement of the majesty and grace of the elephant, the world's largest land mammal. Inspired to paint this original by a sighting in the swamplands of Amboselli, Spencer Hodge was struck above all by the light and etherial qualities of the elephants as they wandered amongst the cattle egrets of their homeland. |
