From the Artist: Dinosaurs ruled the earth before their extinction millions of years ago. And I’m reminded of them when I pass yet another construction/destruction site dominated by ubiquitous long-necked, great-jawed metal monsters—those monsters we have created for reconfiguring our landscapes to accommodate the uninhibited spread of ever more massive subdivisions, trophy homes, industrial parks, office complexes, shopping malls, stadiums, superhighways, interchanges, parking lots—all the unplanned out-of-control sprawl that fragments habitats and destroys ecosystems, evicting the plants and animals that depend on them. Are these mindless machines the new rulers of the earth? –Charley Harper
About the Artist: Charley Harper (August 4, 1922 - June 10, 2007) was a Cincinnati-based American Modernist artist. He was best known for his highly stylized wildlife prints, posters and book illustrations. Born in West Virginia in 1922, Harper's upbringing on his family farm informed his work to his last days. He left his farm home to study art at the Art Academy of Cincinnati, and there he met his wife, artist Edie Harper, with whom he had a son, Brett. He later taught at the Art Academy. In a style he called "minimal realism", Charley Harper captured the essence of his subjects with the fewest possible visual elements. He said of his approach, "I never count the feathers in the wings I just count the wings."The results are bold, colorful, and often whimsical. The designer Todd Oldham wrote of Harper, "Charleys inspired yet accurate color sense is undeniable, and when combined with the precision he exacts on rendering only the most important details, one is always left with a sense of awe."
