About the Artist: Painting still lifes, landscapes and portraits with a palette and brush stroke uniquely his own, John Michael Carter recreates memories of family and friends, people he admires, and special travels. Michael claims he grew up knowing what good art is. Both his father and mother were artists, and their collection of art hung throughout the house. They provided Michael with an early exposure to art and a respect for academic training. His knowledge of painting and art appreciation set him head of others as he entered art school. Michael left his home town of Chicago to further his studies at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, where he studied sculpture for a year. Finding sculpture to be too confining, he decided to finish his studies in painting at the Art Center College of Pasadena in Los Angeles, California, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 1972. The artist's travels throughout the United States and Europe have been the inspiration for many of his paintings. Michael works to capture his immediate feelings, believing that first impressions are very important. Always trying to paint on location, Michael admits that time and environmental conditions may limit his sittings. In this event, he will refer to his sketches and work in the studio. For over ten years, Michael taught drawing and painting at the University of Kentucky, and has been a frequent guest at art workshops throughout the country. He has also received numerous awards in painting.
