About the Art: The vibrant paintings of Linda Thompson are chapters from the ever-unfolding story of nature; an exciting blend of her artistic talents, keen powers of observation and genuine love and concern for her subjects. Nature's relationship with man is often a traumatic one. Thompson's realistic paintings take us a step beyond what we customarily see on the surface. With acrylics and colored pencils, she shows us these encounters from the perspective of the animals with whom man interacts. We all live too fast and don't take the time to see the little dramas in nature...the way it takes care of its own and survives," she says. A long-time resident of Florida's Gulf coast, Thompson is an Ohio native. A former commercial artist, Thompson began painting full time in 1986, finding that her paintings of manatees struck a national chord. One of these paintings won the 1992 Florida Wildlife Magazine cover art contest. Thompson has also turned her artistic attentions to a variety of North American land mammals. She was awarded the People's Choice Award at the First Annual Miniature Show held at Brittany-Lore Galleries in 1995. Her pencil remarque was one of ten honorable mentions in the Wildlife Art News remarque contest from more than 750 entries. When man makes waves, the habitats of myriad life forms must withstand the consequences. Thompson's insightful paintings often depict the ripple effect caused by man interacting with nature. "Realism is often dramatic, like the propeller scars on a manatee's back or the power and independent aura of a cougar. We can talk about saving whales, but what is it that makes them really worth saving? How can we know them without seeing their power, their greatness or the glint of a soul in that bright shining eye? That's how I see nature. The stories are what I paint — making that connection is why I paint. My goal is to capture a scene, tell a story, then leave you with the feeling that you've been there and will come back again. Art can bring nature's images to life and its struggles to our hearts."
