From the Artist: "This drawing was done for the sole purpose of capturing the essence of a large, mature, whitetail buck running hard through heavy cover. Whatever the danger in this particular instance, be it a hunter or some natural predator, is left to the viewer's imagination — the buck has exercised his discretion, leaving it far behind. Depicting this experience with powdered graphite on paper was a great challenge; one that I found very satisfying. It enabled me, in a sense, to hold captive this magnificent and powerful animal that is now just a flash in my memory. Cole has lived in upstate New York his entire life where he pursues some of his favorite activities — hunting, fishing and spending time in the woods. Consequently, some of his favorite subjects are species with which he has become familiar in the field — white-tailed deer, trout, turkeys, hunting dogs, birds of prey and waterfowl — expertly rendered as detailed graphite portraits with a distinct mood.
