About the Artist:

Born in Florida in 1949, Marsha Hammel has lived in Panama, Italy, Germany and Canada. She has travelled the United States extensively, spending time in the west and north-east as well as in the sunbelt cities of Richmond and New Orleans. Since 1980 she has enjoyed artistic success and inspiration living and working in the southern part of the United States.

Marsha Hammel was awarded a scholarship for art in 1967 to the North Carolina Governor's School and between 1968 and 1971 attended the Virginia Commonwealth University, studying in the Fine Arts Department. Her paintings have been selected by musicians and performing art centres to appear on programme covers and as cover art for music. She has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award for Visual Artists of 1992 by the Temple Emanuel and has been commissioned by a Florida ballet company to create art for inclusion in their collection. She has had countless prestigious solo exhibitions, and her work appears in many corporate and private collections.

Marsha Hammel's women have been described as "romantic but not idealised, beautiful but not pampered, private but accessible, strong, confident and independent" by an enthusiastic reviewer.

With a strong market for her original paintings, pen and ink drawings and fine art prints, Marsha Hammel is one of the best-known and most successful artists of atmospheric music scenes and general Hispanic life in the world.

About her work, the artist says:

"The work of my career since the late seventies has been a monument to musicians; inspired by those I knew in New Orleans and whom I meet all the time in little clubs in every city I visit. These are artists who seldom reach fame and fortune but who devote themselves to their art form, Jazz. It is an ongoing project.

Original art is always about much more than image or color, which can be reproduced in a print...there is something "living" about an original piece ... something of the artist's energy stays with it...even work hundreds of years old...When I go to museums and stand before the work of my masters (Modigliani, Matisse, Picasso) I can see them working and listen to their teaching...its always inspiring.

If my work can bring a smile, a warmth, a bit of joy; if it can radiate just a little of the energy of my subject, then I am gratified."
