About the Art: Exuding whimsy and style, Court Jester" is Pete Apsits inaugural sculpture created exclusively for the Legends foundry. Authentic in detail and delightfully fluid in form, this sculptures presentation of the motley fool, known as the jester, uses the combination of various metals to portray this clowns spirited soul. First making their appearance in 14th century Europe, jesters were regarded as professional fools, or buffoons - the individuals you could always count on for a laugh. Jesters found their most powerful expression in the plays of William Shakespeare, where the fools madness, or innocence - either real or feigned - gave him license to mock the pretensions and self-deceptions of those around him. The motley and fanciful clothing of the jester on the Elizabethan stage parodies the customs of sane society, and gives way to the jesters habit of speaking a perceptive, yet humorous, commentary in the form of an unwelcome or comic truth.
