About The Print: Childhood memories shape our imaginations our whole lives long. When I was growing up in Placerville, I carried an image of the perfect high school in my heart. It was the stately brick community high just up the lane. I was privileged to attend that school for one year; then it was replaced by a modern, earthquake-safe version. How I regretted its loss!
When my family moved near to the picturesque bay area town of Los Gatos, I was delighted to discover a high school that fully measures up to my nostalgic memories of school days. Los Gatos High School brings the dignity of its imposing architecture to a world where dignity can be in short supply. With its sweeping lawns and cobbled walkways, flanked by palm trees, stately oaks, and mighty redwoods, it is a California landmark that represents, for its students, the timeless value of education.
I set up my easel across the road from the school, in the meeting area of one of Los Gatos's historic churches. I wanted to capture the drama of dawn light, when the glorious old school building seems to shimmer with anticipation. Soon, the multitudes of students who give the school its vivacity will arrive on the scene, bringing Los Gatos High School to life.
Painting "en plein air" is a method of painting based on setting up a portable easel outside and capturing the surrounding scenery before the light changes. Brushstrokes are bold and color is intense giving the finished piece an impressionistic look. As a longtime traveler, Kinkade has had the opportunity to capture the splendor of many breathtaking vistas with this impressionistic technique. This collection of Limited Edition works is a beautiful ensemble of his Plein Air paintings.
