Wicks was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on December 17, 1969. An interest in art and nature began at a young age and blossomed into devotion during his early years of high school. Atte schools for the arts, Derek graduated with Honors and awards for Artistic Excellence. His scholastic career continued at Sheridan College where he earned a Diploma in Technical & Scientific Illustration, again winning awards for artistic excellence in the Technical and Scientific division of study. Derek worked many years as a freelance illustrator during and after college while pursuing his dream of being a wildlife artist. Gaining international recognition for his wildlife work, Derek devoted his full attention to wildlife art in 1995. Today Derek exhibits across North America and his work is found in major Canadian and American galleries, shows, and private collections. Derek's work has been chosen to aid such charities as the Canadian Conservation Fund, The Ontario Humane Society, Children's Wish Fund, Ducks Unlimited and the Timber Wolf Alliance.
