About the Artist:
Jose Royo was born in Valencia, Spain in 1945. At a very early age he demonstrated artistic talent and by the age of nine his father employed tutors to instruct Royo. Five years later, Royo entered the San Carlos Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Valencia. After graduation Jose continued studying with the Chairman of Art Studies, Aldolfo Ferrer Amblat, at San Carlos Academy.
In 1968 Royo began to exhibit his work in Lisbon, Madrid and Barcelona, and received positive acclamations. He was then commissioned to paint the royal portraits of Queen Sofia and King Juan Carlos, as well as other political figures. But Royo began to feel the growing desire to focus on painting his homeland. He wanted to capture the light and convey the color intensity of Valencia. This change of style in his work needed to perfect new ways to work on classical composition styles, while capturing the brilliant lights and shadows of the Mediterranean.
From 1989 to present day, Royo has developed a –mature” style that uses dramatic color and impasto texturing that captures the female form with unique flair. He has been described as a –painter of the light of the South,” that is the southern coast of Spain. Royo captures his models in a serene, contemplative moment with the surrounding landscape bursting with color. Jose Royoês "homages to the female form" shows a definite influence from Renoir.
