A limited edition of 525 numbered impressions; 80AP, 15PP, signed by the artist In true championship style the 1989 Superbowl was decided in the game's final seconds. The San Francisco 49ers, representing the National Football Conference, and the Cincinnati Bengals, from the American Football Conference, defeated all challengers to earn the right to compete for football's highest honor. And compete they did, in a see-saw battle that featured sustained scoring drives, broken bones, and remarkable individual effort. LeRoy Neiman, who had moved from the sidelines to the end zone, was in perfect position to capture the game's crucial play. The "Super Play" serigraph reveals the drama and intensity of this extraordinary moment. Diagrammed on the chalkboard, "20 HB Curl X-up" seems a simple matter of "x"es and "o"s. LeRoy Neiman's serigraph is rich with details that show the play's excitement. Bengal pass defender Ray Horton (#20) has launched his body paralle to the ground in an all-out effort to stop the winning touchdown. Joe Montana's (#16) arm is just finishing its follow-through, while running back Roger Craig (#33) watches anxiously. The whites of star receiver Jerry Rice's eyes are clearly visible above his face mask as he stares intently at teammate John Taylor (#82), Montana's target. Eight years earlier these sames two teams met in Pontiac, Michigan to decide the Superbowl. The 49ers defeated the Bengals 26-21 in a memorable game captured by LeRoy Neiman in his superb serigraph "Silverdome Superbowl." In 1989 the 49ers were Neiman again traveled to the site of football's climactic contest- Miami, Florida- to record this struggle. "Super Play" freezes forever the exact moment of victory in Superbowl XXIII. Neiman's sparkling football serigraphs have proven to be among his most popular. This is a stirring example of his finest work.
