Funny Cide's first brush with fame came in winning the Kentucky Derby, the first leg of racing's Triple Crown. Going off a decided underdog at 13-1, he became the first gelding to win since 1929 and the first New York-bred winner ever. Two weeks later in Maryland at the Preakness Stakes he won by 9¾ lengths, the second largest margin in Preakness history. The entire racing world was now mesmerized by the possibility of the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. At the Belmont Stakes back home in New York the three-year-old came in third, running in the driving rain. Despite falling short, the horse had thrilled and charmed the public and become a certified celebrity with his picture plastered on all manner of merchandise, candy, beer and other products named after him, and songs dedicated to him.
In the featured serigraph, Funny Cide is seen in his first moment of glory, winning the Kentucky Derby. Wearing his pole position, number 6, he is caught mid-air and mid-stride, hugging the rail in the home stretch. Jose Santos, the only jockey to ride Funny Cide, exhibits perfect form while wearing Sackatoga Stable's red and white checked silks. Horse and rider are a picture of determination and concentration. Running away from the pack, their gaze is directed straight ahead toward the finish line and history.
Images of horses and horse racing are among LeRoy Neiman's most popular and valued prints. The celebrity horses he has immortalized include Secretariat, Affirmed and Spectacular Bid. Funny Cide will be a treasured acquisition for all fans of horses, racing and LeRoy Neiman.
