Although they may be found along the length of the Americas, from Canada to Argentina, mountain lions seem especially at home in the Sierra Nevadas. The artist brings us close to a magnificent cat in its natural environment. Deceptively sprawled on a craggy ledge deep in the Sierras, the cougar's comfortable manner and dangling paw suggest indolent relaxation. But its tautly curved tail and alertly pricked ears tell another story. The cougar is a night hunter, known for its savage grace and extraordinary athleticism. And this one is using the full moon overhead to find its victim. A cougar may measure five feet long (eight feet including its tail) and can weigh in excess of two hundred pounds. These large, powerful cats can bound twelve feet in the air, or leap twenty feet or more to snare their prey. Little wonder that automobile makers like Lincoln-Mercury and university sports programs like Brigham Young have adopted this marvelous animal as their symbol. Even pausing to rest, the cougar depicted is poised for action. The artist has captured not only the cat's regal likeness, but the tension underlying its apparent inactivity. Its yellow-green eyes sweep the surrounding terrain, searching for the slightest movement. LeRoy Neiman has an uncanny ability to discern in his subjects, both human and animal, their innate qualities- strength, grace, nobility- and to reveal them to the viewer through his art.
