Print description: Geoff Hunt is best known for painting the covers of Patrick O'Brian novels, where his meticulous attention to historical detail serves him well. A member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, his work is found in the Royal Naval Museum, Royal Naval Submarine Museum, Mystic Maritime Gallery and private collections worldwide. To deter continuing attacks by the notorious Barbary pirates of Tripoli, The US sent Lieutenant Decatur in command of a 10 vessel squadron. Pictured are the distinguished U.S.S. Ontario, a sloop of war fitted with 20 carronnades. Partly obscured by the lateen rigged xebec is the Guerriere,a 44 gun frigate. Continuing to the right are the 38 gun Frigate U.S.S. Constellation, the Macedonian,a 38 gun frigate captured from the English by Decatur in 1812, and the sloop of war U.S.S. Epervier,also taken from the English. The squadron went on to capture the Algerian pirates' flagship, bombard Tripoli, and then negotiate the cessation of attacks on American shipping in the Mediterranean.
