About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Melchior d’Hondecoeter was born in approximately 1636 in Utrecht, in the Netherlands. The grandson of the noted artist Gillis Hondecoeter and the son and nephew of two other successful artists, he was therefore brought up from his earliest childhood to paint.

Melchior d’Hondecoeter started his career as a painter of fish but he gradually acquired fame as a painter principally of bird life, not least because his passionate paintings of lively, colourful birds contrasted with the general tendency at the time to see birds in the context of a day’s shooting or as meat on display in a shop-front.

D’Hondecoeter soon acquired fame and prestige. He became a Member of the Painters Academy at the Hague in 1659 and was subsequently employed by King William III to paint his menagerie at Loo. He also produced work for the Royal Chateaux of Oranienstein and Bensberg but other examples of his work thrive in major private and public collections around the world.

D’Hondecoeter died in 1695.
