Born at the turn of the twentieth century, Ackland was an artist specialising in the illustration of birds, painting mostly in watercolour. Having been brought up in the countryside, from childhood he had passion for nature and the outdoors, which clearly translates into his works.

He became one of the most eminent artists of birds in the Victorian era.
