About the Artist:
Thomas Moran was born in 1837 and is now one of the best known painters of American landscape scenes.
Along with Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran is renowned as the originator of the dramatic Western panorama, which captured the imagination of turn-of-the-century Americans and inspired the formation of first national parks in the United States.
Thomas Moran first travelled to Yosemite in 1871 on a commission for Scribner’s magazine. The region had been set aside as a state recreation area in 1864 and was made a national park in 1890.
Moran’s personal response to these western territories as a pristine wilderness of extraordinary beauty is the leitmotif of many of his most significant compositions.
Thomas Moran died in 1926.
