About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Born in 1845 in Arundel, Sussex, Albert Goodwin was a landscape and water-colour painter, holding an outstanding position in the modern English school.

He was a member of the Royal Society of Watercolour Painters and he began to exhibit his works in 1860. From this time on, his name was frequently found in the Society's catalogue, in the Royal Academy catalogue and in the results of public sales. He died in 1932.

After early encouragement from the Pre-Raphaelite associates, Ford Madox Brown and Arthur Hughes, the 27 year old Goodwin travelled abroad in the company of Ruskin, through Italy and Switzerland, in 1872. The journey presaged a lifetime of travelling and painting including two trips to Egypt in 1876 and 1909, one to India in 1895 and two to the West Indies and the Americas in 1902 and 1912. Even in 1916, at the age of 71, he undertook the long and dangerous journey by ship to New Zealand, suffering the threat of German U-Boats and an arrest in South Africa. These travels, often financed by patrons, resulted in some of his very best work.

Albert Goodwin's works are highly regarded and examples of his water-colours can be found in the Victoria and Albert Museum, and in the museums of Cardiff, Manchester and Melbourne.
