About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Nicholas Coleman was born 1978 in Utah’s rugged countryside, the son of artist Michael Coleman. He is an experienced fisherman and trapper and his affinity for the outdoors fills his paintings.

Brought up in an artistic environment, Coleman has been painting and drawing for as long as he can remember. Preferring to use traditional methods, he paints with gouache and oil. However, he doesn’t like to label his style as "realism," as there is a certain amount of spontaneity and a slight impressionistic feel to his work. After the birth of his son, he also wrote and illustrated his first children’s book called In the Northwoods.

Coleman has travelled extensively, painting studies and taking photographs for later works. While some of his subjects are observed from his studio located in the foothills of Utah, most are scenes taken from his travels across North America, through Africa and Europe. Coleman has also lived and worked in Brazil for two years. He says: "The wildlife I’m showing in the landscape is very untouched by man. I want to show people these untouched places."

Nicholas Coleman finds inspiration through his travels, and the hunting and fishing he does along the way, as well as in history, art museums and other artists. These include his father Michael Coleman, Bruno Liljefors, Wilhelm Kuhnert, Carl Rungius, Thomas Moran, Albert Bierstadt, and Frank Tenney Johnson. (The list could go on and on.)

He plans to continue working hard at what he loves; his father told him, "you are only as good as your last painting," so Coleman continually strives to improve his abilities. Never one to miss an opportunity, he also wants to improve his etching and sculpting skills.
