About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Adrian Allinson was born in London in 1890. He was the son of a successful miller and was afforded the opportunity to travel and develop his enthusiasm for painting. Allinson was then educated at the Slade School of Art from 1910-12, where he studied alongside Christopher Nevinson and Stanley Spencer under Professor Henry Tonks.

During the First World War, Allison was a pacifist and drew caricatures for the Daily Express, designed stage sets and produced paintings including ‘The Cafe Royal’, described as one of the finest executed during the war. He later travelled to paint in Switzerland, Italy, Spain and Mallorca.

He was commissioned to design posters for the Empire Marketing Board and the main line railway companies yet he is particularly well-known for his work for London Transport between the years 1934 - 1940.

Allinson died in 1959.
