About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

This watercolorist was born in 1825 in North Shields and specialised in landscapes and rustic scenes peopled with children, milkmaids and other appealing genre subjects. Foster was also a skilled illustrator and engraver.

When he was five, Foster was brought to London and was apprenticed at the age of sixteen to a leading wood engraver. He began producing drawings of topical scenes and current events for Punch, the Illustrated London News and other magazines. Foster soon began illustrative work for book publication and in 1846 set up on his own in the same field.

It was not until 1859 that Foster began to paint water-colours in earnest, but he quickly rose to recognition, being elected Associate of the Old Water-colour Society in 1860. By 1862 he became a Member of this society and from that date he contributed around 400 pictures to its exhibitions. Foster exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1859 to 1881. He also invested much time travelling on the continent, gathering much material in colour and pencil sketches.

In 1863 Foster was well established enough to build a house in Surrey, and it is for his portrayals of the Surrey countryside that he is most renowned.

Miles Birket Foster died in 1899.
