About the Artist:
Louis Valtat was a French painter and print-maker associated with the Fauves (wild beasts, so named for their wild use of colour). He is noted as a key figure in the stylistic transition in painting from Monet to Matisse. Valtat suffered from Tuberculosis and he spent many winters along the Mediterranean coast and used to visit Renoir at Cagnes sur Mer. He lived for most of his life in Northern France, including Paris, Rouen and Versailles.
