About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Sickert was born in Munich to a Danish father and a French educated mother, so he had a decidedly international outlook and recognised Paris as the centre of the cultural universe. The family moved to England in 1868. He studied briefly at the Slade in his early twenties and then went to work in the studio of James McNeill Whistler. He also met Degas who became his mentor and thus began a remarkable series of paintings of London music halls. He was divorced in 1899 and then lived in France for six years producing many paintings of Dieppe and Venice and returned to London in 1905. He was a founder member of the 'Camden Town Group' and the 'Fitzroy Street Group' and between the two Wars he followed and increasingly idiosyncratic artistic path, making paintings from photographs, Victorian prints and even press cuttings, which oddly prefigured Andy Warhol's 'Pop Art' experiments.
