About the Artist:
Cropsey was born on Staten Island, New York in 1823 on his father's farm. He trained as an architect and set-up his own office in 1843, but at the same time studied watercolour and life drawing, travelled to Europe and was elected a full member of the National Academy of Design in 1851.
His interest in architecture can be seen in his paintings with the precise arrangement and outline of forms, but he was most strongly known for his lavish use of colour and was a member of the Hudson River School. Cropsey died in 1900.
