About the Artist:
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in 1749 in Frankfurt. He is considered one of the greatest German cultural figures of the modern era.
The eldest of seven children, Goethe was born into a wealthy family. Out of the seven, just him and his sister Cornelia survived into adulthood. At 16, he left home to study law in Leipzig. Goethe preferred poetry and prose to memorising legal formalities and as a result, his studies did not progress. He returned to Frankfurt after just three years of study.
Following a period of illness and a deteriorating relationship with his father, he attempted a career in law once again. He opened a small legal practice to no avail, and instead became acquainted with the royal court and creative pursuits.
Goethe’s 1816 publication ‘The Theory of Colours’ approached colour as a type of scientific phenomenon, from a philosophical perspective. His investigations into colour theory have inspired many artists, including Piet Mondrian and Wassily Kandinsky, with Andy Warhol dedicating a portrait to him.
Artistically, Goethe was also interested in landscapes, biblical stories and medieval scenes.
Goethe had 5 children with his wife Christiane, with just their eldest son surviving into adulthood. He died in Weimar in 1832, at the age of 82. Weimar is a city in central Germany, where his baroque residence is now home to the Goethe National Museum.
