About the Artist:

Alvin Jewett Johnson was born in 1827 and died in 1884. He was a prolific American map publisher, active between the late 1850s and the mid 1880s.

Johnson was born in Vermont and worked as a teacher before moving to Virginia. He began to publish maps in the late 1850s but his first significant publication was his Johnson’s New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas in 1860. This atlas drew on plates owned by the J H Colton Cartographic Publishing Company, which may have been rescued financially by Johnson and his business partner, Ross Browning (1832-1899) in return for permission to use the existing Colton maps. Most of the maps in the new atlas therefore drew heavily on Colton’s work.

In 1861 Johnson and Browning moved to New York and published two editions of the Johnson atlas. Later in 1861, Browning’s share of the company was purchased by Benjamin Ward, whose name subsequently replaced that of Browning on the maps and atlases produced. In 1863 the family atlas was re-issued, but this time compiling older Johnson & Browning maps with newer Johnson & Ward maps from 1862 and entirely new designs from 1863. From 1864, Johnson & Ward published yet another edition of the family atlas, this time using almost entirely their own work and a final edition of the famous atlas was published in 1865, after which Johnson appears to have bought out Ward’s share in the company. Subsequent editions of the atlas were published bearing Johnson’s name alone.

In addition to his family atlas, Johnson issued many other maps, ranging from pocket maps to large wall pieces, but his company always maintained a reputation for quality, accuracy and beautiful hand-colouring. They record some of the most significant events in American history, including the Civil War and the conquering of the Wild West, and are still much collected today.
