About the Artist:
Robert Dighton (born in 1752) was an English portrait painter, printmaker and caricaturist and he was a founder of the dynasty of artists who followed in his footsteps. Much of his work was of designs executed in watercolour, which were then engraved and were sometimes known as droll mezzotints.
In the early 1800's, he was so successful that he opened a shop himself in Charing Cross, where he sold his own prints and those of others until it was discovered that some of his stock was stolen from The British Museum. Dighton escaped prosecution but was forced to move to Oxford until the scandal died down.
Robert Dighton died in 1814.
