About the Artist:

The Sanson family were a series of significant French cartographers of the 17th and early 18th centuries.

Nicolas Sanson, the father of the family, was born in 1600 in Abbeville, where initially he studied the history of the ancient world. He is supposed to have turned to cartography originally only as a way of illustrating his historical work. After moving to Paris, King Louis XIII was shown a selection of his beautifully illustrated maps and eventually Sanson was appointed by the king to the position of Geographe Ordinaire du Roi, where his duties included teaching the king geography.

Sanson’s major atlas, Cartes Générales de Toutes les Parties du Monde, was published in 1654 and employed the work of a collection of great engravers, including Tavernier. Amongst Sanson’s most significant maps were two of North America which became particularly influential: Amerique Septentrionale (1650) and Le Canada, ou Nouvelle France (1656).

Sanson died in 1667 but his business was carried on by three of his sons: Nicolas Sanson, who died before his father in 1647, Guillaume Sanson, who died in 1703, and Adrien Sanson, who died in 1708, assisted by his grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson, who died in 1730.

Many of Sanson’s maps were still unprinted at the time of his death and were re-engraved by AH Jaillot and Pierre Duval, respectively business partner of his two sons and his son-in-law, and thus published after the date of his death.

Sanson is accepted as the founding father of the great age of French cartography.
