About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Sebastian Münster was born in 1489 and, with Mercator and Ortelius, is one of the three dominant cartographers of the 16th century.

Münster in particular was responsible for spreading knowledge of geography and map-making throughout Europe. His most famous work, the Cosmographie of 1544, contained both up to date maps and views of well known cities, and considerable detail about the known and unknown world. It went through nearly 40 editions in 6 languages, becoming one of the most widely read books of its age.

Münster was German and, after an early career as a mathematician and linguist, became Professor of Hebrew at Heidelberg University and later at Basle, where he settled in 1529.

In 1528, following his first mapping of Germany, he appealed to scholars throughout Germany to send him “descriptions” so that “all Germany, with its villages, towns, trades etc., may be seen as in a mirror”, and even gave instructions as to how best local areas should be mapped. He received an enormous amount of information and was eventually able to include many up to date maps in his atlases, though these were not necessarily particularly accurate, relying as they did on a variety of untrained sources.

Münster was the first to provide a separate map of each of the four known continents, and the first separately printed map of England. His maps were printed from woodblocks and his two major works, the Geographia and the Cosmographia, were both published in Basle by his stepson, Henri Petri, who continued to publish editions after Münster died from the plague in 1552.

His Cosmographia was published initially in 1544, but his famous map of London appeared only in later editions of this book.
