Martyn Mackrill’s style is characterised by his illuminating attention to detail and faithfulness to the grand traditions of British marine art.
Hailing from a distinguished line of seafarers, it comes as no surprise that Mackrill prides himself on the historical accuracy of his work. Martyn Mackrill is an immensely keen yachtsman, and spends as much time as possible sailing and helping to restore his 1910 gaff rigged cutter Nightfall.
Martyn Mackrill was born in 1962 on the Isle of Wight. He was immediately surrounded by tales of the sea: his father was a Marine Engineer; his grandfather ran a fleet of trawlers; and his great uncle held an Extra Masters Certificate in Sail. Martyn Mackrill himself began work, in 1983, as a freelance model-maker and he only painted marine scenes in his spare time. These sold out immediately from his local gallery and his artistic career has never looked back.
Mackrill’s work continues the great British marine art tradition which has included such legendary artists as Charles Napier Hemy and Montague Dawson.
