About the Art : David Maass is an acclaimed American wildlife artist, born on November 27, 1929, in Rochester, Minnesota. Entirely self-taught, he developed a love for wildlife early on, rescuing wounded birds and raising pigeons as a child in a hunting-oriented family. Maass began his career at Jostens Jewelry, eventually becoming Art Director, and received early encouragement from fellow wildlife artists, especially during his service with the Marines.
Focusing primarily on game birds, Maass’s exceptional skills in oils have set him apart in the field of nature art. He produced illustrations for Brown & Bigelow calendars for 27 years and has published over 300 images with Wild Wings, Inc. Maass has designed more than 35 conservation and duck stamp images for state and federal organizations, winning two Federal Duck Stamp contests, and receiving multiple Artist of the Year honors from groups like Ducks Unlimited.
His artwork has raised millions for conservation causes, and his paintings are held in major collections such as the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Maass’s influence is recognized through several dedicated books and his legacy as a Master Artist in American wildlife art.
