About the Art

Often called a “river of grass,” the Everglades stretches across more than 5,000 square miles of southern Florida, filled with mangrove and cypress trees in addition to the sawgrass for which it is best known. This rich wetland teems with colorful birds, curious creatures, and powerful predators, all set against the vibrant horizons of sunrise and sunset.

In Spirit of Everglades, a blue heron perches calmly on a limb above alligators and crocodiles, seemingly unconcerned with the danger below. A Florida panther watches on, perhaps gauging its chances for a feathery meal, while ibis, flamingos, and egrets share the scene. Look closely and you may even spot a manatee—often called a sea cow— rolling gently in the distant water.

The Everglades captivates with its beauty and mystery, and for the artist, it is also a place of deep personal memories, reflected in every detail of this composition.
