Knoedler Publishing celebrates the new year with the release of LeRoy Neiman's spectacular limited edition serigraph Aspen Mountain Rendezvous.
One of the earliest ski resorts in the country, Aspen Mountain opened in 1947 with the world's longest ski lift. With dozens of challenging trails and runs up to three miles long, the area became a premiere international resort. The sophisticated clientele made Aspen tres chic, but it has also kept its roots as a small town in the American West. Europeans, accustomed skiing the Alps, easily mingle with Americans.
Says Neiman, "This side of Aspen Mountain is very urbanized. The mountain rises straight up from the streets of the town with their cozy hotels and excellent restaurants. The mountain is populated by both ski bums and the fashionable, who sometimes look better at the base of the mountain than up on the slopes. There's a lot of traffic and fraternizing crowds milling around. There is fresh air and everyone is friendly and outgoing and gregarious, with a lot of posing. It has a brisk feeling of expectancy and optimism. The only way for an artist to look at it is as a joyous occasion."
In the serigraph, skiers and snowboarders at the base of the mountain have stored their various implements and are relaxing al fresco with espresso or mulled cider. Their multi-colored skis and snow suits burst brightly from the background of snow and ice. The social scene buzzes as much as any trendy bar in Manhattan or Miami, and Neiman has placed himself in the very midst of the action. To the right is the housing and entryway to the great ski lift, the Silver Queen Gondola, which carries skiers high into the mountain. Towering over everything is massive Aspen Mountain in icy white, blues and cool greens. Colorful specks of skiers and snowboarders sweep down the slopes at the end of their runs.
Combining sport, landscape and café society on an epic scale, Aspen Mountain Rendezvous is a Neiman masterpiece.
