About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

The Scottish painter Robert Gibb was born in 1845 and acquired a considerable reputation as an artist of epic military scenes.

So successful was his career that Robert Gibb became Keeper of the National Gallery of Scotland from 1895 to 1907 and was also Painter and Limner to the King from 1908 until his death. The ancient position of Painter and Limner brings its holder membership of the Royal Household in Scotland and the duties involve painting the King and members of the Royal Family and recording notable events like coronations, weddings and christenings. Other distinguished holders of the post include Sir Henry Raeburn and David Wilkie.

Particularly noted for his military paintings, Robert Gibb’s works included views of Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow and of the famous military action by ‘The Thin Red Line’, the British Army’s 93rd (Highland) Regiment at the Battle of Balaclava on 25 October 1854 during the Crimean War.

Robert Gibb died in 1932.
