About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

This Russian landscape impressionist was born in Lithuania (then part of Imperial Russia) in 1857 into a poor but educated Jewish family. In 1870, the family moved to Moscow where, aged 13, Levitan entered the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he was a pupil of Savrassov and Polenov between 1873 and 1884. It was at this school that he was appointed Professor of Landscape in 1898, just before his death in 1900.

He was a member of various groups including the Association of the Itinerant Painters, which consisted of traditional painters around the turn of the century, and of the Society of Amateur Artists of Moscow. He was also part of another association, Le Monde des Arts, which revived a more cosmopolitan and international approach to painting in Russia.

Levitan's Jewish origins left a profound mark on his work, which expressed his feeling of the melancholy poetry of the Russian landscape and showed his very personal sadness. In 1879, he met Anton Chekhov and the friendship deepened during the next decade, when he stayed several summers with the Chekhov's in the country.

He went to Paris in 1889 and discovered Corot, Dauvigny and Dupré, who greatly influenced him, learning many new things which were incorporated into his landscapes of the Volga. His work is collected by all the major Russian museums.
