About the Artist:
Barbara Hepworth was born in 1903 in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, the eldest child of Herbert and Gertrude Hepworth. She attended Wakefield Girls’ High School, and won a scholarship to study at the Leeds School of Art from 1920 (where she met Henry Moore). She then studied at the Royal College of Art from 1921, and she was awarded the diploma of the Royal College of Art in 1923. Barbara stayed on a year at the RCA to compete for the Prix de Rome and later studied for a period in Italy studying Romanesque and early Renaissance art and architecture. Throughout her life Barbara was privileged to meet both artists and sculptors whose work influenced and compelled her. These artists included Picasso, Brancusi, Kandinsky Braque and Miró.
Barbara was made a Dame in 1965 ten years before her death during a fire in her St. Ives studio in Cornwall, aged seventy-two. Her work can be viewed in a variety of different locations, with the Tate Collection owning the largest body of works and running the Barbara Hepworth Museum in St. Ives.
