About the Artist:

The noted American artist John French Sloan was born on 2 August 1871, to a successful professional family. His father was a businessman and his mother was a teacher, and he was brought up in Pennsylvania.

Aged 20, John Sloan became an illustrator with the Philadelphia Inquirer, which he combined with an evening course at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. There he met the eminent author Robert Henri, who was to provide him with considerable encouragement and support.

Subsequently Sloan moved to New York, where he painted some of his best known works, including McSorley’s Bar. In his later life, he also spent time working and painting in Massachusetts and in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

John French Sloan made a successful living as an artist and co-founded the Ashcan School. He died in September 1951.
