About the Artist:
Roy Newby (1912 - 2011)
Roy Newby was primarily a commercial artist and he started work in a commercial studio in London at the age of 15. He went on to establish himself as a successful artist, illustrating magazines, drawing posters, designing political banners and making fashion plates before the onset of fashion photography. He spent the Second World War mending searchlights. Sadly, everything he owned, including all his early work, was lost in an air raid.
After the war, now married with two children, he worked from the front room of the family home in Putney, south-west London, as an illustrator, mainly for children’s and young women’s comics. One serial which ran for many years was Robbie of Red Hall in the comic “Girl", the story of a plucky wee lassie and her faithful friend, Duncan, in a series of exciting adventures set in the Scottish Highlands.
When not working commercially, he was a serious painter.
A modest man, Roy Newby was funny, principled, impassioned (marching, for instance, against Mosley's fascists in the 1930's), well-read and entirely without malice. His art had the power to move children and young people to read, to imagine different worlds and to see their own vividly portrayed.
