About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Bernard Sleigh was born in Birmingham in 1872 and died in 1954.

He was an eminent English painter of murals, an artist of stained glass, an illustrator and a wood engraver.

Apprenticed as a young man to a wood engraver, he attended the Birmingham School of Art. There he came under the influence of the Birmingham Group, who were one of the last outposts of late romanticism in the visual arts and were an important link between the last of the pre-Raphaelites and the new Slade School.

His early ability as a wood engraver soon brought him important commissions as an engraver for books, and he became a Member of the Society of Mural Decorators and Painters in Tempera. Thereafter he took a course at the Birmingham School of Art in Stained Glasswork and made a successful living as an artist, illustrator and wood engraver.

He married, and had one son and one daughter. Towards the end of his life, his work increasingly turned from romantic medievalism towards fantasy, and a world peopled by elves and fairies.
