About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

John Hayls, also Hailes was an English Baroque-era portrait painter, principally known for his portrait of Samuel Pepys. Little is known about Hayls. He trained in The Hague or Amsterdam under the portraitist Miereveldt, and is recorded as being in Rome in 1651. He was active as a portraitist in the 1650s and 1660s,

He was mentioned in the diary of Samuel Pepys where he is referred to as "Hales". An extract from 15 February 1665-6 reads, "Mr Hales began my wife's portrait in the posture we saw one of my Lady Peters, like a St. Katherine". Pepys was, evidently, so pleased with his wife's portrait, that he commissioned a portrait of himself.

The artist lived in London, apparently in some affluence, He was buried at St Martin-in-the-Fields church.
