About the Artist:
William York Macgregor was Scottish by birth and was a leading member of the artist`s group known as the Glasgow Boys, painting landscapes and contemporary scenes in a fresh, direct way influenced by developments in French painting. He studied at Glasgow School of Art and subsequently the Slade School in London under Alphonse Legros. When he returned to Glasgow he ran a life class in his studio which also served as a regular meeting place for the Glasgow Boys. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Scottish Academy and also the Royal Academy in London and he travelled widely on the continent over a period of five years just before the end of the 19th Century.
