About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

Carel Allard was a member of the significant Allard family of cartographers and publishers, which ran an active publishing business in Amsterdam in the latter half of the 17th century.

The father of the clan was Hugh (Huych) Allard, who flourished between approximately 1645 and 1691. His son Carel (1648-1709) and grandson Abraham (who died around 1730) continued the business, publishing mainly atlases assembled from maps and town plans completed by famous predecessors like de Wit, Blaeu, Jansson and Visscher. The family’s most prestigious publication, the Atlas Minor, was eventually published in 1797 and was subsequently re-issued on at least two occasions.
