About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

The Visscher family were amongst the most important art dealers and map publishers in Amsterdam throughout the 17th century. The founder of the clan was Claes Janszoon, born in 1587 and with premises near to those of two other great cartographers of the time, Pieter van den Keere and Jodocus Hondius.

Visscher was probably apprenticed to Hondius but he developed his own business from about 1620 and designed a number of significant maps, including one of the British Isles.

Visscher’s first published atlas consisted of maps that he had bought in from Pieter van den Keere and altered marginally, to include, for example, historical scenes of important conflicts.

After Visscher’s death, his son Nicolaes Visscher (1618-79) and his grandson Nicolaes Visscher II (1649-1702) continued his business. The latinised family name, Piscator, often appears on the maps created by the Visscher family.
