About the Art: Superior Edition
About the Artist:

The 18th century German cartographer Adam Friedrich Zürner was born in 1679 and died in 1742.

He came from an educated family and studied Theology at the University of Leipzig before becoming a pastor in Skassa. Increasingly his love of maps came to dominate his life though and he eventually left his parish and subsequently moved to Dresden, where he found work as a surveyor under the patronage of the Elector Augustus the Strong of Saxony.

Zürner’s cartographic work thus primarily focuses on Saxony and parts of Germany, but his Map of the Americas first appeared in 1709 and, famously, shows California as an island, which mapmakers of the time believed to be the case. The map also includes a carefully elaborate cartouche to disguise the fact that the areas of the North West were simply unknown at the time, and the title and vignette scenes are decorated with illustrations of American life, including noble Native Americans. The block of text on the plinth describes discoveries in America from Columbus onwards.
