About this Piece: This Limited Edition Print has been printed with lightfast inks on acid-free, matt coated, high grade board from elemental chlorine-free pulps sourced from environmentally-conscious paper suppliers. After discovering the world of old-fashioned roses and the fin de siecle atmosphere they exude, Paul Seaton began to grow them himself and became intimately acquainted with what he describes as such olde worlde delights as blackspot, powdery mildew and thorns through the thumb. He found painting flowers of this kind, and other garden and cut flowers, a fascinating challenge in that one is constrained to work from the arrangement at lightning speed in order to catch the flowers before they fade or otherwise misbehave. Paul Seaton comments on this subject: The world has enough by way of ugliness without its artists being obliged to add to the mess. So, painted with great rapidity, as this subject must be, my hope is that it captures that strange timeless moment when one comes into contact with something unexpectedly beautiful. The roses depicted in this subject are 'Glamis Castle' and Boules de Neige (the white roses), 'The Prince' (the red roses) and 'Souvenir de la Malmaison' (the pink variety, named after the Empress Josephine's garden at Malmaison). Commenting on this image, Paul Seaton notes: People ask me - as they tend to ask representative artists in general, I suppose - questions such as "How did you paint that wooden table-top so that it appears to be almost tangible?"The answer is that one must train oneself to paint light, not objects. The character of the table top (for example) is created by the interplay of shade - the dark reflections of the roses and leaves on the table - and relative light - the grey-ish reflection of the wall behind the arrangement. For me, knowing the roses so well, when I look at these paintings I can still just gasp at the wonderful scent of these varieties, the timeless perfume that fills the studio - combined strangely with the feeling of terrible controlled panic that one has but a matter of hours to capture them in paint before they are changed forever and gone forever! People say : "O what a wonderful occupation, so calm and reflective and unhurried...! How relaxing it must be!". Little do they know the anguish when one is in the final straight, on the verge of completing the painting of this flower or that - and some are more than crucial to the overall composition - the anguish of seeing the whole flower fall suddenly to pieces and land ignominiously on the table, with a soft sound like a parachute falling to earth, a sad pile of petals, leaving nothing but a bare stalk where once the focus of the whole arrangement sat! Yet - when the work is finally complete - there is no satisfaction like that one gets on looking back at it, months later, and finding that one won the battle with time, and caught an instant of loveliness on the wing.
About the Artist: Paul Seaton was conceived in Australia but born in 1953 in Birmingham. He grew up in Wales and along the south coast of England, following the career of his father, who was in the Royal Navy.

Despite his early fascination with Pre-Raphaelite artwork, and particularly with subjects at the Birmingham Art Gallery like The Blind Girl by Millais, Arthur Hughess The Long Engagement and Maddox Browns The Last of England, his parents persuaded him not to attend art school and instead he took a degree in Maths at Exeter University.

After completing his degree he enjoyed a part time career in rock music whilst also working as an agent for a property tycoon. He suffered a bout of nervous exhaustion as a result of what he describes as too much rocknroll and, during his recovery, became interested in Eastern religion and meditation before taking up painting as a rather more adult and spiritually-satisfying career.

Paul Seaton began painting still-lifes as what he describes as a means to an end namely, to teach myself to paint. He studied the Pre-Raphaelites intensively and spent many hours at the Tate Gallery, in particular examining the works of Millais. Much to his delight he found that his work began to sell in West End galleries and he has exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy Summer Show, the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, the Mall Galleries and others. His work is also exhibited in New York, where he has held two one-man shows, and around the United Kingdom.

Paul Seaton and his wife started their married life in North London, before moving out to the south of England to escape the pressures of city life. He has three children and his hobbies include teaching his two sons to play the guitar and researching his family history and naval history in general.
